EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / DIRECT ANSWER

Local SEO for solar installers means winning the Google Maps pack and "solar near me" searches in your service area — and, increasingly, being the name an AI assistant gives when someone asks who to call. For an installer, this is usually the highest-return marketing channel available, because homeowners researching solar are already close to a decision by the time they search.

Why I tell solar clients to start here, not with ads

Solar is expensive to advertise for. Every click on a solar-related term in Google Ads costs real money, and you're competing against every other installer in the region for the same auction. Local SEO doesn't have that per-click cost, and once it's working, it keeps working without you paying for each new enquiry.

That's not an argument against paid ads — they have their place, particularly for a new business needing enquiries fast. It's an argument for building local SEO alongside them from day one, rather than treating it as something to get to later.

What a homeowner is actually looking for

Someone searching for a solar installer isn't casually browsing. They've usually already decided solar is worth exploring and are now trying to answer four things quickly: do you cover their area, are you trustworthy, roughly what will this cost, and how do they get a quote. Your online presence needs to answer all four fast, or they'll move to the next name on the list.

The single highest-leverage thing you can do

Your Google Business Profile. Not your website — your profile. For a local trade like solar installation, this is what actually shows up in the map pack, and it's where most homeowners form their first impression.

Get these right:

  • Complete every field. Categories, service area, hours, phone number, a proper description — half-finished profiles rank worse and convert worse.
  • Use accurate categories. "Solar energy contractor" and similar options exist for a reason; pick the ones that actually match what you do.
  • Post real photos. Actual completed installations, not stock images of panels on a generic roof.
  • List your genuine service area. Cover what you can actually reach, not an ambitious radius that damages trust when you can't service a request.
  • Post updates regularly. A profile that hasn't posted anything in six months reads as inactive, even if the business is thriving.

Building pages that actually answer the question

A single page saying "we install solar panels" won't rank against installers who've built proper content. What works instead:

Separate pages for what you actually offer — residential, commercial, battery storage, servicing — each with real substance, not a paragraph each.

Honest location pages, if you cover more than one town or region — genuinely useful content about serving that area, not the same template with the town name swapped, which both Google and AI tools increasingly recognise and discount.

Direct answers to the questions homeowners actually have — realistic cost ranges, how long installation takes, warranty terms, how the process works. This content does double duty: it helps a human decide, and it gives an AI assistant something specific to quote back when someone asks it the same question.

Reviews matter more here than in most trades

Solar is a large purchase, and a nervous buyer leans heavily on what other homeowners say before committing. Reviews do two jobs at once: they're a genuine local ranking signal, and they're social proof for someone about to spend a serious amount of money.

Ask every satisfied customer at the moment the install finishes and they're happiest — not weeks later by a generic email nobody opens. A steady trickle of recent reviews outperforms a big cluster followed by silence, both for ranking and for how it looks to a prospective customer scrolling through your profile.

The part most installers haven't noticed yet

Homeowners are starting to ask AI tools directly — "who's a good solar installer near me," "how much does solar cost in my area" — and getting a generated answer with specific names in it. This is a genuinely new discovery channel, and it rewards almost exactly the same fundamentals as local SEO: clear, factual content; consistent business details everywhere online; real reviews; and information that's kept current.

Very few solar installers have caught up to this yet. That's the opening.

What this actually produced for a real client

I'd rather show a real number than make a general claim. Solar4Good, a UK solar installer we worked with, moved from Google Maps position 14 to position 2. Reviews grew from 18 to 47. Google Business Profile views rose from 340 to 1,240 a month. Inbound calls went from 9 to 40 a month. In the same 90-day window, the business picked up 205 separate citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode.

That's the local SEO and AI visibility fundamentals described above, applied consistently over three months.

A starting checklist

  1. Fully complete your Google Business Profile, with accurate categories and a genuine service area
  2. Fix your business name, address and phone number so they match everywhere you're listed online
  3. Build proper pages for each core service, with real depth
  4. Write honest location pages for each area you genuinely serve
  5. Answer real customer questions on the page — cost, process, timelines, warranty
  6. Set up a system to request reviews at the moment a job finishes
  7. Test whether AI tools already recommend you, and note the gaps
  8. Post to your Google Business Profile regularly, and keep your key pages current
